Ever tried making your own Halloumi Fries at home? Oh my, they are a wonder to behold! Super simple in the oven or air fryer, they are our favourite squeaky cheese in chip form. A perfect snack or side dish.

A plate of crispy and golden halloumi fries, with a bowl of dipping tzatziki, on a table with drinks.

I can’t get enough of halloumi, so much so that I actively set out to think of new ways I can cook (and eat) this deliciously salty, squeaky cheese.

To get other members of my family firmly on board, I had a ‘eureka!’ moment when I thought of Halloumi Fries.

I set out testing, knowing that any recipe had to be quick and easy, like my Halloumi Wraps and Halloumi Pasta recipes that work so well. Delicious but speedy!

Here’s what I discovered:

✅ That a few simple spices would add plenty enough flavour to a cheese that already has a lot on its own.

✅ That some recipes out there don’t use them, but we found Panko breadcrumbs provided the perfect crunchy outer coating, complementing the soft squidginess of the halloumi in the middle.

✅  The golden rule to getting golden, crispy Halloumi Fries is to thoroughly pat the halloumi dry first! Also, make sure the fries are spread out and not touching when cooking, as this allows the air to reach around them and get them really crunchy.

✅  While many recipes out there involve deep frying the fries, we found it really isn’t necessary. (I personally would never cook like this for a regular dinner.) Oven baking or air frying gets fantastic results enough, especially using an olive oil spray for a light, even distribution to get a crunchy coating. (You could drizzle some olive oil on with a spoon if you’d prefer but you may find your crunchy outside is a bit patchy.)

✅  The best way to enjoy them is to eat them immediately, while they’re at the perfect consistency of crispy on the outside, and soft and gooey in the centre.

Why you’ll love this easy Halloumi Fries recipe

⭐️ A tasty alternative to regular homemade fries

⭐️ Quick coat and dip, and ready to cook for 10 mins

⭐️ Golden, crunchy and satisfying

What to serve with Halloumi FRies

The best dipping sauce for Halloumi Fries in my opinion is homemade Tzatziki, and I also love sweet chilli sauce to offset the saltiness of the halloumi, but you could use any kind of dips you prefer.

I make these as part of a buffet or barbecue, or as part of a side dish alongside something like Sheet Pan Kebabs or Chicken Souvlaki. Also perfect with a Greek Salad.

I always have a pack of halloumi in the fridge because it’s inexpensive, has a good shelf life and holds its shape when cooking. It’s also really meaty, which means I can always reach for something substantial to make for dinner.

However, I do realise fries aren’t a whole meal on their own (although, honestly, they would be for me if I was just cooking for myself!) So if you don’t have time to cook a main part of the meal, have a look at my other halloumi recipes here for inspiration.

Halloumi Fries Ingredients

The ingredients for making Halloumi Fries laid out on a white counter top.
  • Halloumi – We’re using a whole block for this recipe, which is typically about 225g in the UK / 8oz in other countries. Obviously, simply scale up if you want to make more. Cut the block up carefully into 1cm fries.
  • Plain flour (all purpose flour)- This is for coating the fries.
  • Spices – Smoked paprika, garlic granules and oregano.
  • Egg – Just 1, beaten.
  • Breadcrumbs – Use Panko breadcrumbs for this recipe. They work so well!
  • Black pepper – For seasoning.
  • Olive oil spray – You could use a little olive oil on a spoon to drizzle this over the fries instead, but you won’t get the even distribution that the spray can give.

How to make Halloumi Fries

1. Pat the halloumi chips completely dry. Mix the flour, smoked paprika, garlic granules, oregano and a good pinch of black pepper (as per the full recipe below).

2. Toss the halloumi fries in the coating, dip the halloumi into the egg then straight into the breadcrumbs, making sure all sides are well covered.

3. Use the oil spray to lightly oil the rack of the air fryer, then place the halloumi fries in a single layer and spray again. If oven baking, do the same on a lined baking tray.

4. Turn the fries halfway through the cooking time, then serve immediately when golden and crispy.

Leftovers

Can you reheat Halloumi Fries?

Although they are definitely best eaten fresh, you can reheat them in the air fryer or oven for 2–3 minutes at 180°C/400F if you have leftovers you want to eat (they will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.) I wouldn’t recommend microwaving them or they’ll go a little soggy.

Can you freeze Halloumi Fries?

While I wouldn’t purposefully make these ahead of time because they’re best enjoyed immediately, you could freeze any leftovers rather than wasting them.

Once cooled, place them on a baking tray in a single layer in the freezer for a couple of hours before storing them in a bag or container for up to 2 months. Reheat them from frozen.

They will be less crunchy and maybe a bit chewy if not eaten fresh, but they’ll still be delicious.

Recipe Tips

Dry the halloumi

Patting the halloumi dry with kitchen roll or a paper towel before you do your dipping etc helps them to crisp up.

Give them space

Another key trick is to make sure the fries are spread out and not touching in the air fryer or oven tray. This will help them to get really crispy.

Olive oil spray

We wouldn’t usually insist on an olive oil spray for our recipes but it really makes such a big difference here. This makes sure the fries are evenly, lightly coated in oil, resulting in them becoming golden and crunchy all over.

You could drizzle some olive oil on with a spoon if you’d prefer but you may find your coating is a bit patchy.
