Ingredients

  • 225 g Halloumi Cut into 1cm chips
  • 3 tbsp Plain flour
  • 1 tsp Smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic granules
  • 1/2 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1 Egg Beaten
  • 60 g Panko breadcrumbs
  • Black pepper To season
  • Olive oil spray

Instructions

  • Prepare the halloumi: Pat the halloumi chips completely dry with kitchen paper (this really helps get crispy fries.)
  • Mix the spices: Mix the plain flour, smoked paprika, garlic granules, oregano and a good pinch of black pepper in a bowl.
  • Dip for flavour: Toss the halloumi fries in the coating until lightly covered and shake off any excess.
  • Coating: Dip the halloumi into the egg then straight into the panko breadcrumbs. Make sure all sides are well covered.
  • Prepare to cook: Place on a lined baking tray or plate while you coat the rest.

For the air fryer:

  • Heat the air fryer to 190°C/370F.
  • Use the oil spray to lightly oil the rack, then place the halloumi fries in a single layer.
  • Spray with the oil spray and air fry for 8-10 minutes, turning halfway though, until golden and crisp.

To oven bake:

  • Preheat the oven to 220°C fan/240°C/475°F/Gas Mark 9.
  • Place the coated fries on a lined baking tray and spray with the oil.
  • Bake for 15-18 minutes, turning halfway, until crisp and golden at the edges.

Notes

Pat the halloumi dry: Patting the halloumi dry with kitchen roll or a paper towel before you do your dipping etc helps them to crisp up.
Give the fries space: Another key trick is to make sure the fries are spread out and not touching in the air fryer or oven tray. This will help them to get really crispy.
Olive oil spray: This makes sure the fries are evenly, lightly coated in oil, resulting in them becoming golden and crunchy all over. You could drizzle some olive oil on with a spoon if you’d prefer but you may find your coating is a bit patchy.
Reheating leftovers: Although they are definitely best eaten fresh, you can reheat them in the air fryer or oven for 2–3 minutes at 180°C/400F if you have leftovers you want to eat (they will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.) I wouldn’t recommend microwaving them or they’ll go a little soggy.
