Here’s how to make your own Fajita seasoning from scratch for a delicious flavour and no hidden ingredients. It’s super easy, can be used in so many dishes and keeps for up to a year!

A bowl and spoon on a tablecloth with fajita seasoning inside, and a smaller pot to the side.

I have been making my own Fajita Seasoning for a while and I have so many recipes with this flavour on my website and in my books, I thought it was time to share the simple homemade blend so you can do it too!

I noticed that a lot of pre-mixed seasoning from packets contained a lot of ‘filler’ ingredients and very high salt levels.

Knowing what actual spices go into a fajita mix, I realised I could just spend a few minutes making a batch of my own.

It means fresher, tastier ingredients, nothing hidden in there, and also saves money.

Chicken Fajitas (or Slow Cooker Chicken Fajitas on busy days) are often on a weekly rotation in our house because it’s probably my kids’ number one meal of choice, it’s important to me that we’re dialling down the preservatives where possible.

There are loads of other Mexican-style recipes that this works in too (see below for some suggestions).

This recipe makes about 3 tablespoons of Fajita Seasoning (approximately 30g), and because it’s so easy, I simply replenish with another batch when the jar is getting low as we do use lots of it.

Sarah’s notes

It was perhaps the first proper batch I made of Fajita Seasoning that I realised how much of this flavour we enjoyed in our dinners at home, from my newer recipes of Chicken Fajitas Potatoes and Air Fryer Mexican Chicken, to old favourites like Chicken Fajita Pasta and Mexican Rice & Chicken (and not forgetting Halloumi Fajitas for meat-free days.)

Turns out I am always thinking of ways to make some kind of fajitas!

I also have plenty of similar flavoured recipes in both my first and second recipe books, What’s For Dinner and What’s For Dinner in One Pot, too!

We have tested this fajita blend recipe numerous times and I should say that for this it’s best to use fresh spices, NOT any from dusty jars at the back of the cupboard that are a year or two out of date (just me that keeps finding these?!)

It really does make such a difference to the end product.
