A Full English Breakfast is the ultimate hearty breakfast. Here’s your foolproof works-every-time guide to your favourite breakfast recipe. It’s a super easy, no-faff and healthy method with delicious results!

A table with a full English breakfast on, with toast and cutlery to the side.

Cooking a Full English Breakfast might seem straightforward, but often 10 minutes into cooking, chaos has descended and we wonder how to pull it all together without burning the lot.

That’s where this easy guide comes in!

We’re cooking everything in the oven – including the eggs – instead of the traditional frying (which is where the name ‘fry up’ comes from).

Why? Because it’s healthier this way and it’s far less messy… no oily splatters all over the hob and surfaces! And it’s so much easier to time everything just right.

Why you’ll love this English Breakfast Recipe

⭐️ Zero faff and no mess

⭐️ Timed to perfection

⭐️ Easy hands-off oven method

What is a Full English Breakfast?

If you’re not familiar with this dish, the Full English is a hearty breakfast, usually made up of bacon, sausage, eggs, baked beans, mushrooms and tomatoes, give or take a few ingredients (for example, some would consider leaving out black pudding a no-no. It’s made up of pig’s blood, fat, oats and flavourings. We haven’t added it in this recipe, but if it’s to your taste, feel free to add this in.)

Really it’s a ‘British Breakfast’, as this dish is also common in Ireland, Wales and Scotland too, although there may be a few variations (such as haggis – yum).

Full English Breakfast Ingredients

The ingredients for making a Full English Breakfast laid out in bowls on a counter top.
  • Sausages – There are so many kinds to choose from in the supermarkets or butchers. Options on flavours, quality and size are out there. For this recipe, we’ve gone for classic medium pork sausages, as a guide for timings
  • Bacon – Here we’ve made ‘streaky bacon’ with our Full English to get that full impact flavour and crispiness. This kind is the most common bacon in the US, but you could also choose back bacon if that’s your preference
  • Eggs – I always use medium, free range eggs. We’re baking these in the oven, so you’ll need to crack these individually into muffin tray holes
  • Baked beans – Tinned beans in a tomatoey sauce are very common in British cuisine, and especially for breakfast. Here’s a homemade recipe if you really want them on your plate but can’t get hold of them: Baked Beans Recipe
  • Tomatoes – Large vine tomatoes are the best for cooking in the oven. So much flavour!
  • Mushrooms – Go for your favourite kind
  • Herbs – A sprinkle of oregano or thyme (or a mixture of both) over the tomatoes and mushrooms as they cook (along with salt and pepper) really make a difference to the flavour

How to cook a Full English Breakfast

A white oven dish filled with raw sausages for step 1 in the recipe for a Full English Breakfast.

1. Put your sausages into an ovenproof dish, making sure to leave them room between each. Pop into a preheated oven.

A lined baking tin with halved tomatoes and mushrooms on, seasoned with salt and pepper, for step 2 in the recipe for a full English breakfast.

2. Line another tray and add your halved tomatoes and mushrooms, then drizzle with oil and season with herbs and salt and pepper.

Raw streaky bacon on a grill pan with foil underneath.

3. As per the timings below, after a little while add your bacon on a lined grill pan.

A muffin tray with a raw, cracked egg in each of the 4 holes, for step 4 in the recipe for Full English Breakfast.

4. Break the eggs individually into a muffin tray and bake. Don’t forget to pop your ovenproof dish with beans in too. When everything is cooked, serve with tea and toast.

Substitutions

  • Gluten free – You can make this gluten free by making sure your sausages are GF
  • Vegetarian Full English – Use veggie sausages instead of pork and swap the bacon for halloumi if you like (or simply use meat free bacon rashers)

Leftovers

In the fridge You can keep leftovers in the fridge for 3 days. Reheat fully before serving or eat cold.

Timings

The timings for cooking will slightly depend on the type of ingredients you have.

For example, thicker or thinner sausages and bacon rashers might have slightly different results, so keep an eye on them in the oven to see how they’re doing.

When it comes to the eggs, this also depends on how you like them. As a guide, I’d say 20 minutes is ideal if you like them runny. More like 30 if you like them cooked through.

FAQs

Should I prick the sausages first?

No! This is bad trick your Gran taught you. You want them to cook in their juices.

What kind of tray should I use to bake the eggs?

I use a silicone one for this as it makes them a touch easier to pop them out, but any muffin tray would do the job.

What should I serve with a Full English Breakfast?

I always serve mine with a round of buttered toast and a big pot of tea (English Breakfast Tea). Oh, and lashings of HP sauce. But it’s all down to personal preference, so you do you!

Can I add hash browns to a Full English?

Of course! This is a great addition. Just check the timings and add them into the oven at the right moment.

What about fried Bread?

Years ago this was always a staple in the Full English and is exactly what it sounds like. If you’d like to get a pan out and fry your bread in oil to get that greasy but classic addition to your meal, go for it.
