How we came up with this recipe
This is another take on my popular Naan Bread Pizzas, which also ticks the box for homemade cheat-stye recipe.
I will happily make this recipe on bagels, muffins, pitta breads and even toast!
In this version we’re using passata as it’s a good shortcut to a quick sauce. Ready-made tomato pizza sauce also works, of course.
In the past, we’ve tested this recipe with tinned tomatoes, which tastes good but requires another cooking step, so is not ideal.
We’ve also tested the base sauce with tomato puree instead, but found the flavour to be too strong. It’s also more expensive and can have a sort-of uncooked taste to it.
Value-for-money passata wins out every time here, and all we have to do is season it well and mix in a few herbs for an instant pizza sauce.

French Bread Pizza Ingredients
- French bread – This is a long baguette AKA ‘French stick’. Part bake baguettes work well too
- Sauce – Passata, garlic granules and dried oregano
- Grated mozzarella – I prefer this here rather than buffalo mozzarella, as that can need longer cooking as it can be quite wet
- Your chosen toppings
How to make French Bread Pizzas
1. Cut the bread in half lengthways, and again down the middle.
2. Mix the sauce ingredients together.
3. Spread the sauce on top of the bread.
4. Add your cheese and choice of toppings, then bake according to the recipe below.
Toppings
This is all down to your personal preference and what you have available. Here are some that I like and that work well:
- Pepperoni
- Chicken
- Sweetcorn
- Onions
- Chilli
- Mushrooms
- Ham
- Olives
- Peppers
- Basil
- Fresh tomatoes
Top tip
Choosing the bread
If you don’t have a bakery or supermarket with a bakery selling fresh bread nearby, you could buy a part-baked loaf instead.
Aldi does a nice part-bake sourdough stick, and other supermarkets will have something similar.
Bear in mind the cooking time might be slightly longer if you use part-baked.
Leftovers
In the fridge Leftovers are great cold for lunch (mmm cold pizza!) Keep covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.
In the freezer I wouldn’t recommend freezing this recipe as it will go soggy.
Reheating You could reheat this in the microwave but it won’t be very crispy. You could also try reheating in the oven but it might become a little overcooked so be careful.
FAQs
Of course it will depend on what kind of toppings you add, but in general yes. The calorie count is much lower than in normal pizza.
We’re also using mainly fresh, unprocessed ingredients here so it has far fewer additives than in a ready-made kind.
If you’re in a hurry, these are great on their own or with a quick side salad.
But if you’re cooking these as part of a bigger meal, you could serve up Homemade Chips and Garlic Bread too.
