On Saturday night we held a Burns supper. I’m sorry my very dear Scottish pals, is that sacrilege, what with us being so far south of the border? I do hope not. Some years ago a Scottish friend complained that she didn’t get to eat haggis now they lived here, I set about putting that right and we hosted our first Burns supper.
There’s been a pair of toddlers since then who have put me rather out of dinner party action. So this January was my chance to get back and do that thing I love most; feeding people.
Apologies, this post does not include many photos of food. Ooops. Bad blogger. I blame this almost entirely on my slightly mis-guided decision to organise a spot of whiskey tasting before the main course.
The menu looked like this…
Scottish Smoked Salmon on Rye Bread with Creme Fraiche, Horseradish & Dill
Haggis on Oatcakes with Homemade Chutney
Braised Venison (this recipe)
Neeps & Tatties (I used this roasted version and they were delicious)
Broccoli & Green Beans with Mustard and Almond Dressing
Raspberry Cranachan Trifle (this recipe)
Scottish Cheeses (supplied by the lovely Deli in our village) and Oatcakes
We drank Scottish ales (thanks Aldi) and a selection of whiskeys. A slightly Scottish pal addressed the Haggis and everyone ate some – hurrah! We listened to plenty of Scottish favourites (Texas took me right back there to the late 90s..) and I was somehow surprised at just quite how strong whiskey actually is..
The guests left full of whiskey and haggis and laughter in the early hours. Not before Kate polished of the last of the cranachan on her way out…
I love a reason to cook for so many people, it challenges me and appeals to my super organised side. I adore the planning and preparation, the making the table pretty and lighting up the house with candles (don’t worry, we were all safe, there were two fire fighters as guests).
Did you celebrate Burns night? Haggis – love or loathe?
