A Weekend in Brightlingsea, Essex

Brightlingsea Essex Holiday Weekend
My parents live in East Anglia, a 3 hour drive away, along the very boring A14. We try to visit every couple of months and there is always a lot of excitement from G&H at the thought of spending the weekend with Goggy and Grandad.

A few weeks ago it was my Mum’s 70th birthday and mine and Mr TTs wedding anniversary. (6 WHOLE years, where did that time go?) We decided to make a mini holiday of the trip and booked a place to stay in a little town called Brightlingsea, near to where my parents live.

A 10 minute walk or so away from the town of Brightlingsea is the harbour. A little haven of an old fashioned, unspoiled English beach holiday. It’s not swanky, there’s no Joules or Fat Face, but there is ice cream, sandcastles and beach huts. It’s perfect.

We stayed in a beautiful apartment called My Harbour View. It’s in a development modern flats and it has the most amazing wrap around balcony. It’s worth a visit just to sit there and watch the world float by. Okay, not the world, it’s a pretty small harbour but a fantastic spot all the same.

The sun shone, we ate fish and chips, drank milkshakes, counted beach huts, went crabbing and bought dinner (fresh off his boat) from Terry the fish.

G&H both loved crabbing. H was jumping from foot to foot shouting ‘More crads! More crads please Daddy!” She took the whole business of using her net very seriously. Don’t worry, we were very kind to the crabs and put them safely back in the water once we’d fed them supper of fish heads donated by Terry.

Can every weekend be like this please?

Where’s your favourite place to paddle at the weekend and why is it, fish and chips really do taste better by the sea?

Anywhere in the UK tastes better compared to the 99.999% crap that gets called fresh fish and chips here (in Ireland) but if you’re driving a bit further north through East Angular, the Melton Fish Bar in Woodbridge (corner of Station Road) is (relatively) close to the sea and very delicious.

Glad that you enjoyed your visit to Brightlingsea! I consider myself very fortunate as I come from a 5 generation Brightlingsea family and grew up in the town and have raised my own family here! It is a nice place to live despite the few detractors who do their best to run it down. BTW for Fish and Chips, after Johnny Macs Plaice, the next best place for Fish and chips is in Aldeburgh…can’t remember the name of the chippy, but you will spot it as they always have a queue stretching down the road and you are only a two minute walk to the beach!
